Versailles, with its château, the King’s Garden, the Park covering almost 1,000 acres, the Trianon châteaux and Marie-Antoinette’s Domain feature among the finest jewels which the history of France has bequeathed to the world’s artistic heritage. This incredibly rich monument demands constant care in order to preserve and enhance it. The implementation of a "master plan for Grand Versailles" which I had the pleasure of undertaking in 2003 in my capacity as minister for culture and communication, while Christine Albanel presided over the fortunes of this establishment, provided an answer to the need for better care of this immense and precious heritage. It required the determined support of the State but also invited companies, foundations et private individuals to consider that such a wide-ranging project, so necessary for our country’s prestige, should be supported by myriad generous acts of sponsorship, based on the provisions of the law of 1 August 2003 on sponsorship and foundations, which I had passed through Parliament.
Sponsorship represents a major asset for Versailles. It now applies to all of the establishment’s projects, whether they concern the enhancement of its heritage, restoration of its buildings, decors and gardens, improvement of conditions of access by the public or even the organization of major cultural events.
It is my wish to see a wide-ranging international coalition of know-how and generosity on behalf of Versailles so that brilliant new projects may see the light of day and restore Louis XIV’s Château to its full glory.
